equal pacE: an overview

equal pacE stands for "web tool-based equal gender pay analysis for a competitive Europe". The project aims to provide and promote a web tool that enables companies to voluntarily analyse their pay structures to detect a potential gender pay gap and its causes. On this website you will find a version specifically adjusted for online use in the United Kingdom, offered free of charge. Moreover, a country-specific version of the equal pacE web tool is available in Flemish-Belgium and the Netherlands, Finland, France and Poland.

The equal pacE web tool is an interactive software application for identifying the main drivers of a gender pay gap that may exist on the company level. It is based on high-quality standards of academic research. The equal pacE web tool is an adjusted version of the already established German web tool Logib-D for the online application in the United Kingdom. The results of analyses done with the equal pacE web tool are presented in a clearly arranged outcome report (PDF file) including graphics and additional explanations. The results of the analyses can serve as starting points for dealing not only with intra-firm gender pay gaps, but also with strategic issues in human resource management.

To promote its introduction in the United Kingdom, a train-the-trainer workshop was organised to inform social partners, multipliers and public authorities about the project and the functionality, capacities and benefits of the equal pacE web tool. In addition, strategies and tools were discussed to help the participants' member institutions highlight the issue of equal pay, and evolve and disseminate strategies, mechanisms and tools to tackle gender pay inequalities in companies.

equal pacE will be executed jointly by the Cologne Institute for Economic Research (IW Köln), PMSG PersonalMarkt Services and Roland Berger. It is co-funded by the PROGRESS programme of the European Union. The consortium is also financially supported by its associate partner the German Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth (BMFSFJ).

Potential benefits of the equal pacE web tool:

  • Boosting employer attractiveness:
Applying the equal pacE web tool can make it easier to attract and retain top talents, in particular high-qualified women. It can also help in the development of programmes for increasing the number of women in leadership positions.
  • Motivating employees:
Creating pay equality can improve a company’s reputation as a fair employer. Fairness, especially in wage issues, is a strong driver of motivation and job satisfaction.
  • Receiving insights into the pay structure and the composition of staff:
The equal pacE web tool improves the transparency of the composition of the staff and its relation to wage distribution in the company. Analyses can be run separately for single years and different department or units of the company.
  • Adding gender data to sustainability reports:
By applying the equal pacE web tool, a large variety of gender-specific figures can be obtained which can be used in sustainability reports.
  • Support for the concept of gender diversity:
For companies that already run gender diversity programmes or are about to implement initiatives, the equal pacE web tool helps to identify starting points for HR on how to overcome an underrepresentation of female or male employees in departments, positions or jobs.
